On Day 3 we had a full day of driving ahead of us as we were due at our hotel in Chicago that night. Besides Kansas to Salt Lake, this was the longest stretch of driving for us at one time. It was amazing how the landscape of South Dakota seemed exactly like Kansas: Big blue skies and green, green grass.
After a morning of driving and stopping and napping and movie-watching we stopped for a late lunch in Sioux Falls. (Hence the waterfalls we saw as we entered the city).
We found a yummy pizza place and the kids were SO ready to get out and stretch their legs. It was a fun, eclectic place and we pretty much had the place to ourselves. Madelyn had made Jonathan and I shirts for Mother's and Father's Day and we proudly wore them that day. I love her creative gifts and ideas!
Then it was back on the road! It was a really long stretch after that. The kids played a few games and watched lots of movies to entertain themselves. I got a kick out of the way they would drink out of their water bottles we gave them. Finally, we crossed the Mississippi River!!! It is ginormous! The kids loved crossing over it on the bridge and imagining what it was like during Huckleberry Finn days. :) We still had a few hours to go before we reached Chicago.
With dinner and construction and traffic, we did not roll into our hotel until super late, and then it was even longer until we made it into bed because no one at the hotel was ready for us and we had to take off our car top before we could finally park and unload. But....we made it!
